MADRID: La Liga president Javier Tebas (pixel) Wednesday hit Qatar-owned Paris Saint-Germain and what he called “club-state” after the French club signed Lionel Messi and a string of stars in the transfer window.
“Club states are as dangerous to the football ecosystem as the Super League,” said Tebas Twitter.
“We have been critical of the Super League because it has destroyed European football and we are equally critical of PSG.”
Tebas said the PSG that pays Messi a declared salary of € 500,000 (RM2.4 million) per week is “unsustainable” when TV revenues for France’s Ligue 1 fell by 40% and the coronavirus pandemic caused severe losses.
Messi’s tearful departure from cash-strapped Barcelona means the Spanish league has lost its three biggest names within five years.
Neymar moved to PSG from Barca for a world record of € 222 million (RM1.08 billion) in 2017, Cristiano Ronaldo left Real Madrid to join Juventus in 2018 and PSG lured Messi away from the Catalans, who did not they could no longer afford to keep the six-time Golden Ball winner.
During the transfer window that closed on Tuesday, PSG also signed veteran Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos, Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, Morocco defender Ashraf Hakimi, Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum and Portugal defender Nuno Mendes.
The French club, which are aiming to win the Champions League for the first time this season, have also turned down a string of offers from Real for striker Kylian Mbappe. – AFP
