KOOL TV BABE OF THE WEEK: LYNDA CARTER IS WONDER WOMAN!

Image: UNIVERSAL.

She may have hung up the eagle shaped basque, the satin tights and the lasso of truth a long time ago, but the simple fact remains that, even now, thirty years on, the delectable and multi talented model/ actress/ singer/ writer Lynda Carter is still the one and only amazing Amazonian princess brought to life from the colourful graphic novel pages of DC Comics- WONDER WOMAN - and has stayed firm as a true TV icon. Following on from her groundbreaking three year run fighting Nazis, criminal geniuses, robots, killer beasts and even aliens from outer space (!), there have been numerous new film and TV attempts by both DC and Hollywood to get a re-make off the ground (including a recent treatment by BUFFY/ FIREFLY/  DOLLHOUSE creator Joss Whedon), and speculative actresses names as to who might play her have floated through the internet and magazine gossip columns air for years, ranging from the likes of Sandra Bullock to Catherine Zeta Jones and, more recently, Eliza Dushku and Megan Fox. But, in my mind, none of them can match the statuesque beauty and looks of ex-Miss USA Lynda Carter. They broke the mould literally and figuratively when she arrived on the entertainment scene, and I think it was pre-ordained by someone somewhere out there that she would play the part, of which Wonder Woman has been a true heroine in entertaining audiences of all ages since 1941.

Over the last five years or so, the character has had to move with the times and has now been altered by the politically correct brigade, even making her wear a new covered up costume in her comic series - a decision which has caused much controversy with die-hard fans. On the TV front, momentum has also been growing for her return with the news that ALLY MCBEAL/BOSTON LEGAL creator David E.Kelly may be successful in bringing her back to live-action reality, but in a series format that looks likely to emulate the success of SMALLVILLE in the way they approach the comic born character, obviously modernising her origin tale and putting her in contemporary situations (again, there goes the classic outfit and probably the spinning costume change imitated by kids for years (and an idea apparently thought of for the series by Carter herself)). Just who Kelly has in final mind to play the new WONDER WOMAN, and whether she'll still be her TV secret agent alter-ego Diana Prince, is unknown, but it will be very intriguing to see whose name is eventually announced. One things for sure-she'll have mighty boots to fill! And let's hope that, like her appearance a few years back in SMALLVILLE, Lynda also gets to make an important contribution here, too!

All three seasons of WONDER WOMAN are available on DVD from UNIVERSAL PLAYBACK.
